Nostril Obstruction

This definitely falls under the label of GROSS (which I'm sure many things will as we raise two little boys) - so if you stop reading now and wait for another post with cute boy pics I'll certainly understand. I will however go ahead and relate the story just because it is worth remembering and it may serve as a word of caution to all those who read this and might someday hand a twenty-month-old a box of raisins.

I told David one day "I thought they would have come with common sense installed." Obviously not.

During dinner last night Benjamin decided to put a raisin up his nose - I told you this story was gross. Anyway, we tried everything we could to dislodge the raisin but our efforts were dried fruitless. I first called the Hendrick Medical Center emergency room and asked the lady that answered how serious this was. She said it could be serious and cause an infection if it didn't come out and if it started hurting bring him in but otherwise just go to my pediatrician today. I then called my pediatrician's emergency number and the doctor on call reassured me that he would indeed live through the night with a raisin in his nose but should be seen this morning. So at 9:30 a.m. today I took Benjamin in to have a raisinectomy. Needless to say he didn't much care for being held down by myself, a nurse, and the doctor while the doctor removed the raisin but everything did come out okay.

The funny thing was that Benjamin didn't seem at all bothered by having a raisin stuck in his nose. He never rubbed his nose like it hurt, he never sneezed (not even after David and I held some pepper under his nose trying to get him to sneeze the raisin out), and he slept peacefully all night long. The only thing he was upset about was being held down first at home then at the doctor's office. Hopefully he was traumatized enough to never put anything up his nose again. We had a big discussion with both boys about the fact that putting anything in your nose or ears is a BIG NO-NO. We'll see if the lesson sticks.

I apologize to all of you who will never be able to eat raisins again.
